Background of Fraunhofer & HySecunda Project
Fraunhofer drives applied hydrogen R&D and technology transfer, connecting South Africa’s production potential with Germany’s decarbonization needs. Within the HySecunda project, Fraunhofer develops practical, scalable solutions across the full green hydrogen value chain in South Africa and the SADC region to reduce production costs and accelerate market uptake. The work integrates technology development—spanning electrolysers, water circuits, tanks and pipelines, and safe H2 sensing—with certification and market mechanisms and targeted capacity building. This approach supports localization of manufacturing, skills development, and IP generation. Current outcomes provide a strong foundation for future SA–Germany collaborations across the broader Fraunhofer hydrogen portfolio.
Date
18 - 20 Novermber 2025
Intended outcomes of the workshop
- Concrete project and consortium ideas between Fraunhofer and South African/SADC partners across H2 production, storage, transport, safety/certification, and PtX.
- A joint position paper for German and South African policymakers on how joint R&D can drive a green H2 economy, localisation and IP generation in South Africa.
Audience / Participation
- Industry, RTOs, universities, and public stakeholders from South Africa and the wider SADC region.
- Limited places! Target size: 20-30 participants.
Scope
- Short partner pitch slots available.
- HySecunda results and broader Fraunhofer H2 R&D portfolio: electrolyzers, catalysts/PGMs, water treatment, storage/tanks/pipelines, barrier layers, sensing and safety, PtX (ammonia/methanol/SAF), systems integration/digital, certification and market design, and skills development.
