We are pleased to welcome you to the 19th IEA Task 30 Workshop – an exclusive, invitation-only gathering under the umbrella of the IEA Advanced Fuel Cells Technology Collaboration Programme (AFC TCP).
This international workshop builds on the success of previous Task 30 meetings held across the globe and continues to serve as a critical forum for sharing the latest advancements in electrolysis technologies—including polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM), alkaline exchange membrane (AEM), and solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC).
In recent years, the deployment of water electrolysis systems has expanded from laboratory research to full-scale demonstrations and commercial installations. As electrolysers become increasingly integrated with renewable energy systems, the global community recognizes the strategic role of green hydrogen in achieving a sustainable, fossil-free energy transition.
South Africa holds a unique and strategic position in the global hydrogen value chain:
- The country is the largest global producer of platinum group metals (PGMs), essential for many electrolysis technologies.
- With abundant solar and wind resources, South Africa is exceptionally well-suited for renewable hydrogen generation.
- The Hydrogen Society Roadmap for South Africa places electrolytic hydrogen at the heart of the country’s green energy ambitions.
This year’s workshop, set in the scenic Cradle Moon Conservancy near Johannesburg, will bring together international experts, Task 30 partners, and key stakeholders for:
- In-depth technical discussions and presentations
- Group working sessions focused on membranes, catalysts, PTLs, and alkaline systems
- Flash talks and panel exchanges on materials durability, system integration, and cost reduction
- A technical site visit exploring infrastructure in South Africa
As with previous Task 30 Workshops, this event will not only advance the research and innovation agenda of the IEA AFC TCP but also foster meaningful collaboration between academia, industry, and government.
We look forward to welcoming you to South Africa in October 2025 for a highly focused, productive, and inspiring workshop. Further information will follow in your invitation email and via the official website.
On behalf of the organizing and Task 30 leadership teams,
Welcome to the 19th IEA Task 30 Workshop 2025.
